John Grant Getty, Sr was the oldest son of John and Elizabeth "Eliza" Getty. He was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland around 1800-1810.

He was married to Margaret Coulter in the Townland of Slievenagh in the parish of Portglenone, County Antrim, Northern Ireland and they had seven children:

6. Elizabeth "Betty" Getty

7. Nancy Getty

John and his family came to America in 1855 and settled in Minnesota.
