John and Elizabeth (Eliza or Betty) Getty of Craigs were the parents of James, Elizabeth, Jane and John, and probably more children. It appears that Eliza was married to another Getty before she married John and had at least one child with him, named William. William was born in 1804, emigrated to the United States in approximately 1849, and settled in Athens, Ohio, in 1850.

John was from the Townland of Ballynafie in the Parish of Portglenone. He and Eliza were married sometime prior to the birth of their son, James, in 1810, but all efforts to locate their marriage record were in vain.

The oldest son of John and Eliza, James, married Matilda McCaughey, daughter of Hugh McCaughey of the Townland of Limnahary, parish of Ahoghill. They are the main subject of our story.

John and Eliza's daughter, Elizabeth (also called Eliza), married William Anderson and emigrated to America in 1865. Her story appears on another page.

John and Eliza's son, John (2), married Margaret Coulter and they lived in the Townland of Slievenagh, in the parish of Portglenone. John (2) and Margaret's son, John (J), and his family, came to America in 1885, and settled in Minnesota. His story will, also, be related later.

Eliza Getty died November J, 1848, at the age of 66 years. That would place her birth date at about 1782. Her husband, John, died March 27, 1853, at the age of 65 years, which sets his birth date at 1788. Unless there was a mistake in his age on the death record, he would have been six years younger than Eliza.

They are both buried in Grave No. 7G in the Craigs Parish Cemetery.

Several other Getty families lived in this area, and are believed to have been related to John and Eliza, but even though I have countless names and dates, I have failed to find a connection. There was a John and Nancy Getty who lived in the Townland of Broughdone in Ahoghill Parish. John died on January 12, 1854, age 92, and Nancy died July 17, 1867, age 103. Both are buried in Craigs Parish Cemetery.

They were the parents of John, who married Martha Dixon, and Rodmond, who married Margaret Harkness.

John and Martha Dixon Getty had eight children:

This Matthew and his wife, Mary Douglas Loughridge, were the parents of my correspondent and dear friend, Mollie Getty Cromey. Mollie is married to Rev. Fred Cromey, who was born in Ahoghill. They are retired from the Presbyterian Ministry and live in Ontario. The Broughdone Gettys are another story in themselves.
