Emeline Elizabeth
Getty. I have very little information about
William's and Leticia's first born, except
that she was probably born in Indiana in
1858 or 1859. Where she lived after her
mother died is not known. Presumably, after
William and Addie were married, she made her
home with them, as she was listed on the
1870 U.S. Census, Helena Township, Antrim
County.
It seems strange that
in all the memorabilia I have from the
William Getty household, there is no mention
of Emeline. On one of the affidavits in
William's pension record; he lists the names
of all his living children. Her name is not
on that list. Of the several different
newspaper accounts of William's death in
1902, she is only mentioned in one of them,
as a daughter living at Central Lake.
August 17, 1874, her
uncle, Charles Getty, of Central Lake, sold
20 acres in Milan Township, Monroe County,
to his father, James Getty. Emeline
witnessed the signing of the deed. Her name
was written Emmie E. Getty.
On September 4, 1875,
when she was 17, she and John Hanley, age
26, of New York City, were married in Antrim
County, Michigan, by John Acker, Justice of
the Peace. Witnesses were Michael and
Adelaide
Underwood of Central Lake.
