Edna (Heiden) and Henry Berns' second child was Lavern Frederick "Dutch" Berns born Monday, August 9, 1920 at the family home. He attended Bridge School through the 8th grade along with his brothers and sisters.

He married Hildegarde "Sallie" Andrews on April 10, 1939 in St Matthew Lutheran Church in Raisinville Township, Monroe County, Michigan. They had four children.

Dutch was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a sergeant with the Flying Tigers Squadron in the China - Burma theater.

After the war, he worked at the Monroe Auto Equipment for a number of years and eventually went to La-Z-Boy Chair Company also in Monroe where he worked until he retired.

Lavern died on October 28, 1988 at the age of 68 and is buried at the St Matthew Lutheran Church cemetery. Sallie passed away on December 16, 2012 at Fountain View in Monroe and she is also buried at St Matthew. She was 92 years old.
