[This section will be of interest to the descendants of Arthur and Mildred (Roggerman) Heiden. Mildred's parents were Ralph Raymond and Adeline "Addie" (Getty) Roggerman who lived in the Dundee, Michigan area.]

The research into this family has been a bit frustrating. So far, we have only been able to go back to Mildred's grandfather, Charles John Roggerman who emigrated to America in 1881 or 1882 from the Isle of Rügen in Germany.

One of the key issues has been the spelling of the surname. Charles used the name as Roggerman in records in America but one of his sons, George, chose to drop the second "r" and go by the name Roggeman. He felt that this was the proper spelling used in Germany. The other children of Charles used the Roggerman spelling.

In the U.S. census forms over the decades, both spellings are used to describe the family as they lived in the Dundee area. The German records sometimes spell it Roggermann and that is how it appears on Charles' headstone below.

So, we will continue to do research on this branch of the family and hope to come up with the ancestors of Charles John Roggerman or Roggeman or Roggermann or...

Roggerman or Roggeman or Roggermann? In U.S. census forms, the name is listed as either Roggerman or Roggeman. With the exception of Charles' youngest child, George who chose to use the name Roggeman without the "r", the rest of the family regularly used Roggerman. In some German records it is spelled Roggermann and that is how it appears on the headstone for Charles, the ancestor who came from Germany although he used Roggerman during his life in America... from what we can tell.
