Charles John Roggerman is the earliest member of that family that we have found so far. Charles, who was born on February 14, 1855 was the grandfather of Mildred (Roggerman) Heiden.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, Charles listed his birthplace as Is. Rugen, Germany which is the largest German island and is located in the Baltic Sea. It is about 32 miles long from south to north and about 25 miles wide at the widest point. Rugen Island has been under the rule of Denmark at times during its long history.

The island is connected to the mainland by the Rugendamm bridge which originates in the city of Stralsund. Two of Germany's national parks are located on the island.

It appears that the Roggerman family originated about 55 miles north of the villages where many of the Heiden, Rambow and other families lived during the same timeframe.

Roggerman or Roggeman or Roggermann? In U.S. census forms, the name is listed as either Roggerman or Roggeman. With the exception of Charles' youngest child, George who chose to use the name Roggeman without the "r", the rest of the family regularly used Roggerman. In some German records it is spelled Roggermann and that is how it appears on the headstone for Charles, the ancestor who came from Germany although he used Roggerman during his life in America... from what we can tell.
