Eliza Jane (Getty)
Underwood was born on October 26, 1843 in
Ballymena, County Antrim in what is now Northern Ireland. She was the fifth of the nine
children of James, Sr and
Matilda (McCaughey) Getty.
Eliza arrived
with her parents and six siblings at the port of New York on October
2, 1852 aboard the the
SS William Rathbone.
After spending two years in New York State, the
family moved to Ridgeway Township, Lenawee
County, Michigan. Eliza was
eleven years old by this time. When she was
sixteen, she hired out to John and Martha
Gifford, who had previously moved to Ridgeway
Township from New York state.
She was married to
William A. Underwood and they had nine children:

Eliza died on August 20, 1881 and is buried
in Ridgeway Cemetery in Ridgeway Township,
Lenawee County, Michigan. In 1882, William
married Adelaide Underwood, the widow of his
brother, Michael. |
