Helma and Herb Nickel lived at this address which is
adjacent to and directly south of the farm owned by Herb's
parents. We would guess that it was once part of the farm
acreage. Herb and later, their son, Larry, worked the farm
through their adult lives.
After his parents' passing, Larry and his wife
Betty and children Kathy and Lee lived here.
As
a teenager, I used to help bale hay and straw for Herb and Helma
and I really enjoyed the time I spent with them and their son, Larry. Helma
always made the largest meal of the day at noontime and
she was a wonderful cook! It was great for a growing teenage boy
since my family ate its largest meal at dinner time after my dad
got home from his job in the factory. Those were good days!
A few times when Larry would be
off on a hunting trip or something, I would go over and help
Herb milk the cows. That would be very early in the morning and
then again in the late afternoon after school.
One of my jobs was to climb up into the silo
and toss silage down to the cart 15 feet below. One time just as
I was swinging the heaping fork of silage toward the opening,
Herb looked up from below and yelled something. It was too late
to stop so the load of silage went tumbling down onto his face. I
could hear him spitting it out and mumbling, "You damn
roundhead!" Of course, I had to stifle my laughter until he
cooled down.
