Germans to America is a series of books which index passenger arrival records of people from German lands from 1850 to 1897. Each volume contains a chronological listing of the passenger lists, followed by an alphabetical index of each passenger in that volume. There are approximately 70,000 names in each volume. The following information is generally given for each passenger: name, age and sex; and when given: occupation, country or province of origin, village of residence (many say "unknown"), and destination (many say "unknown" or simply "US"). Also listed is the name of the ship, date of arrival, and ports of departure and arrival.

  • Note: The total listing for this voyage of the SS Thuringia appeared on pages 112 to 117 of Volume 31 of Germans to America.  The listing for Heinrich and Wilhelmina (Milhan) Rambow and their oldest two children, Friedrich  and Bertha (Burgard) is on page 114.

It appears that, perhaps a cousin, neice or other young relative came along with Heinrich and Wilhelmina. Listed with them is Friedricka, an 18 year old, single female, Wilhelmina, a 16 year old female and Chr (probably Christoph), a 9 year old boy.

In the way the family is listed with Heinrich, Wilhelmina and their 4 year old son, Friedrich and baby daughter, Bertha at the top of the list followed by the other children, it would seem that they were not Heinrich's children. He and Wilhelmina had been married in 1868 only 5 years before the boat sailed. Friedrich was born in 1869 followed by Bertha in 1872. All their other children were born in America.

  • Johann CHRISTIAN Hans Rambow (son of Johann Christian Friedrich Rambow) born Jan-31 1832, Muchow,Mecklenburg-Schwerin, landlord & farmer, married May-04-1866 to Maria Elisabeth DOROTHEA Kundt, born Dec-18-1835, Muchow.

     J. Christian H. Rambow & family left Germany from the port of Hamburg on April 15, 1874, on the SS Thuringia and arrived on April 30, 1874, at the port of New York. They came with children Hanna, Johann, Joachim, and Johanna. (First daughter Luise was already married and came later in July with her husband John Evers and their infant daughter.) From New York they settled in Columbus, OH by Oct. of 1874, where their last child was born. Then by 1875 they moved to Cullman, Alabama, where they settled and farmed next to the John A. Evers farm.

Dorothea Kundt Rambow died Aug-02-1899 in Cullman, AL. 1. Christian H. Rambow died Jan-26-1904, also in Cullman Co., AL. They are buried in Cullman City Cemetery.

This appears to be the other Rambow family on the boat to America with our Rambows. On the web, none of the previous 2 generations of this Rambow matches any of our Rambows. Muchow, now called Malchow, is about 25 miles south of Gross Wokem, from which our Rambows came. For more info on this Rambow family, do a search on the web for Rambow.
