Heinrich Friedrich Johann Heiden was born in Mamerow, Germany on Tuesday, June 19, 1866 as the oldest child of August and Fredericka (Knaack) Heiden. He came to America with his parents in 1873 at the age of 7 years aboard the S.S. Saxonia.

On Wednesday, January 31, 1901, at the age of 33, Henry married Emma Stock from nearby Ida, Michigan. She was 19 years old and was born on Saturday, April 24, 1880 in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Her parents were William and Hannah Stock. William died in 1914. Hannah was born in Germany on March 6, 1853 and Hannah died in Ida, Michigan on May 7, 1930.

The 1900 census report has unmarried 33 year old Heinrich listed as the head of the household.  Also living in the house were his parents, August and Rika and his siblings Lena (Koster 18) and John (15).

Ten years later, the 1910 census showed him living with his wife, Emma at 8700 with new children August John, William Leo, Elsie (Klatt), Dorothea (Strzesinski) and Esther (Kehrer). They also had a border, Clarence Miller, who probably was a hired hand for them.

By the 1920 census, Heinrich was shown to own a larger farm at 8420 Dixon Road about 2 miles by road from 8700 South Custer Road. However, if you walked across country, the new land was almost directly north behind August's property. Heinrich and Emma were farming there with their children, William Leo, Elsie (Klatt), Dorothy (Strzesinski), Esther (Kehrer), Henry William and Libby (Murdoch). August was off on his own at that time.

Heinrich Heiden died of a heart attack while planting potatoes on his farm at 8420 Dixon Road at the age of 55. Two of his children, August (Gust) and Libbie discovered him in the field and brought him back to the house in a horse and buggy. He died on Thursday, April 20, 1922, just a few months before his father’s death that September. In a twist of fate, his son, Henry William would also die of a heart attack at the age of 55.

After her husband's death, Emma lived with her oldest son, August John at 414 Eighth Street in Monroe. In 1950, she was listed as living at 2847 Prairie Street in Ida a short distance from her two daughters, Libbie (Heiden, Frank) Murdock (2895 Prairie) and Esther (Heiden) Kehrer (7810 Prairie).

Emma, who lived to be 81, died on Thursday, November 16, 1961 in Maple Lane Manor Rest Home in Adrian, Michigan. She was buried at the St Matthew Lutheran Church cemetery in Raisinville Township.

During their 22 years of marriage together, the couple had seven children including 3 boys and 4 girls.

Henry and Emma were living in Raisinville Township with their 7 children and working a 126 acre farm that they owned. They had 4 horses and 7 cows and a telephone.

The August (42) and Rika (39) Heiden family were living on West 9th Street in the City of Monroe, Michigan. Three children, Ernst (12), Willie (6) and Herman (4) were listed as living at home. Heinrich (14) was not included and may have been working and living somewhere else already. August was a carpenter, Rika was a day laborer and Ernst was at school according to the report.

Note: Included on the same pages of the census were several other families who had originated in Mecklenburg, Germany too.

On January 10, 1921, a fire in the Commerce Department building, Washington, DC, resulted in the destruction of most of the 1890 census.
In this census, Heinrich (34) was living on South Custer Road with his parents, August (62) and Reka (59) Heiden and his sister, Lena (Koster) (19) and brother, John (16). Heinrich and Emma did not marry until 1901.
Heinrich (44) and and his wife, Emma (30) were living on what was then called River Road (now 8420 Dixon Road) with their children August John (9), William Leo (7), Elsie (5), Dorothy (3) and Esther (1). Clarence Miller was living with them as a "Servant" but more likely a farm worker.
They were listed as living at 2 River Road which is now 8420 Dixon Road. Heinrich (55) and Emma (40) were living with their children William Leo (17), Elsie (15), Dorothy (13), Esther (11), Henry Wm (9) and Libbie (5). On April 20 of 1922, Heinrich/Henry died suddenly of a heart attack.

Note: Listed living next door to the west was George Wakefield (78) whose father was from Vermont and mother from France. No children or spouse were listed at that time.

Emma (50) lived with her eldest son, August John (29) at 414 Eighth Street in the City of Monroe. Her children, Dorothy (23), Esther (20), and Libbie (14) also resided at this address.
Emma (59), August John (38), Dorothy (33) and Esther (31) lived together in Ida, Michigan. Emma was listed as having finished the 4th grade in school. August John who went through 8th grade was a hired farm hand who earned $150 the previous year. Dorothy worked in the box shop of a paper mill and earned $530 while Esther was employed by a trucking firm earning $480 the previous year. Dorothy completed 8th grade and Esther 7th grade in school.
Emma (69) and August John (49) lived at 2874 Railroad Street in Ida

Heinrich Heiden will be cited as the original "Heinrich" rather than his Americanized form of Henry F. to distinguish him from his son, Henry William Heiden who will be shown as Henry Wm Heiden. (left).

Stock vs Stokes - The wife of Heinrich Heiden had the maiden name of Emma Stock. However, family members oven referred to her and her relatives as "Stokes".

Her Social Security application lists her as Emma Stokes. However, the U.S. Census of 1880 and 1900 list her as Emma Stock and her father as William Stock. Her 1901 marriage license says Stock.  The obituary for her mother Hannah, lists all the relatives' names as Stock...so that's the name we will use.
