Lena Sophie (Heiden) Koster was born on Friday, October 7, 1881 as the seventh child born to August and Rika (Knaack) Heiden. She was born in the family home at 8700 South Custer Road and also lived as a youth with her brother, Heinrich Heiden at 8420 Dixon Road.

She married John Koster, Jr. in Maybee, Michigan on Thursday, February 19, 1903 when she was 21 and he was 22 years old. John was born on Friday, May 28, 1880 in Germany.

In their early married life, Lena and John lived at 2863 Radka Road in Dundee Township according to the 1930 census. John's mother, Dora Koster, who was 91 at the time lived with them there along with the two younger sons, Harold and Marvin.

By the 1950 census, they were living with their grandson, Gerald John Koster in Bedford Township, Monroe County, Michigan. This is where John Koster, Jr. lived when he died on July 1, 1962 in Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was 82 years old.

At the time of her death on July18, 1973, Lena was living with her youngest son, Marvin, on a farm at 11501 Dixon Road in Dundee Township. She was buried next to her husband at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dundee. Lena was 91 years old.
 

On January 10, 1921, a fire in the Commerce Department building, Washington, DC, resulted in the destruction of most of the 1890 census.
In this census, Heinrich (34) was living on South Custer Road with his parents, August (62) and Reka (59) Heiden and his sister, Lena (Koster) (19) and brother, John (16). Heinrich and Emma did not marry until 1901.
 
Lena (39) and her husband, John Koster (40) and their children, Erlin (16), Harold (3) and Marvin (1). John's mother, Dorothea Koster (81) who was born in Mecklenburg, Germany was also living the family.
