During the early to
mid-1900s, this building was used as Fonia School. It was a
short distance south of South Custer Road and the home of
Ernst
"Ernest" Heiden at 8925 South
Custer Road. His children, Frank (1897-1923), Edwin
"Pete" (1899-1977), Walter (1903-1985), Ada (Heiden) Robbins
(1906-1987), Elmer (1909-1981),
Florence "Maggie"
Miller (1911-1993),
Ervin (1913-1996) and Alfred "Dave" (1915-1998) attended the
school through the 8th grade.
Later
after the one-room schools were incorporated into the Dundee
Community Schools in the late 1940s, Fonia School was
converted into a single family home. According to
JoAnn (Heiden)
Kimlin, her aunt,
Dorothy (Heiden) Strzesinski (left) lived there for
a while and you wouldn't have guessed it was once a school.
